LEAD light

Where AI fits in your own work and life, so you can decide where to start instead of trying everything at once.

LEAD light asks what fills your week and sorts each task into four boxes, from Leave it to AI to Do it yourself. In about 15 minutes you know what to hand over, what stays yours, and where to start.

A simple tool I built with AI to help you sort your tasks and work out what you should do and what AI should do.

Reading The Old Dog Guide to Claude and not sure which task to pick for the Introduction? Run this first.

Run it here

No AI account needed and nothing to install. It works the same whichever AI tool you use, or if you don’t use one yet.

  1. Press Start.
  2. Write down six to ten things you spend time on in a normal week or month. Work and home both count.
  3. Answer six yes or no questions about each one.
  4. Look at your map, which is your tasks sorted into the four boxes. If a task has landed in the wrong box, move it. You know your work better than the page does.
  5. Pick one first thing to try.
  6. Copy your map as text, or print it on one page.

Your answers stay in this browser. Nothing you type is sent to OLD DOG AI or anyone else. Come back on the same computer and browser and they’ll still be there, until you press Start again. On a different device you start with a clean page.

Not sure what to write? Press See an example first to walk through one person’s finished map. Your own answers are kept separately.

Run it with Claude, as a prompt

Works in an ordinary chat on any Claude plan, the free one included. Nothing to install.

  1. Click Copy the prompt.
  2. Open Claude at claude.ai or in the Claude app, and start a new chat.
  3. Paste it into the message box (Ctrl+V on Windows, Cmd+V on a Mac, or press and hold on a phone) and press Enter.
  4. Answer the questions. It takes about 15 minutes.

A long paste shows up as a small “Pasted” box in the message area. That’s normal: just press Enter.

On the free plan, if you reach your message limit partway through, come back when it resets and type “carry on” in the same chat.

Keep it in Claude, as a skill

A skill is a set of instructions Claude keeps, so you can run LEAD light again any time by asking for it. Adding one takes a couple of minutes. Do it on a computer, at claude.ai or in the desktop app.

  1. Download lead-light.zip and leave it zipped.
  2. In Claude, open Settings, then Capabilities, and check that Cloud code execution and file creation is switched on. Skills need it.
  3. Click Customize in the sidebar (or go to claude.ai/customize), then Skills.
  4. Click + Add, then Upload skill. Choose lead-light.zip and click Upload. Claude runs a quick security scan.
  5. Start a new chat and type: Run LEAD light

If your computer unzipped the download into a folder, upload the SKILL.md file from inside it instead. On a work Team or Enterprise plan, your administrator may need to allow skills first.

On paper

The same exercise as a two page worksheet. Print it and use a pen.

LEAD builds on the GAIN matrix from the entrepreneur and author Dan Martell, which sorts work by how hard it is for people and how hard it is for computers. The names, questions and wording here are ours.
